THE CEDARSTEP GUIDE

Dressing and reaching

Questions about dressing aids and reaching equipment, starting with the clothes and tasks you use every day.

A useful starting point is the item of clothing or everyday object you want to manage. Explain whether the difficulty is bending, reaching, gripping or fastening.

Ask about the actual task

The NHS equipment guide includes aids for socks, zips and buttons. Ask an OT or equipment service which designs you could try with your own clothing.

For a reacher, make a note of what you want to pick up and from where. Ask the supplier about its stated length, grip and intended use. Don't use equipment beyond its instructions, or to handle hot or heavy items unless the manufacturer specifically says it is designed for that task.

Before you buy

Check whether you can operate the handle comfortably and whether the item can be returned if it is unsuitable. Read the returns policy before ordering, particularly for items sold with hygiene restrictions.

Add dressing and reaching to your planner. Ask your local service about assessment and provision; arrangements differ across the UK.
