Find home adaptation support

Choose your UK nation to find the official route for home adaptation funding. This signposter does not decide eligibility or calculate a grant.

Your route, by UK nation

Your nation determines the official route. The type of work, renting or owning, and whether it is for a child add questions to raise with the service; they do not produce an eligibility result.

England: Disabled Facilities Grant

In England, the published headline maximum is £30,000. An adult application normally considers income and savings. This is a scheme limit, not an estimate of what you would receive. Contact your council about an assessment and its grant application process.

Wales: ENABLE and Disabled Facilities Grant

Wales has ENABLE support and Disabled Facilities Grants. Use the Welsh Government guide to find the appropriate route. Contact your local authority about home adaptation support.

Scotland: Care equipment and home adaptation support

Scotland uses its own equipment and home adaptation arrangements rather than the Disabled Facilities Grant. Contact your council’s social work team to request a care needs assessment and discuss adaptations.

Northern Ireland: Disabled Facilities Grant through the Housing Executive

Northern Ireland has its own Disabled Facilities Grant process involving the Housing Executive and an occupational therapist. Contact your local Health and Social Care Trust to start the process, or ask your GP or social worker.

A worked example

A tenant in England asking about a level-access shower is directed to their council and the Disabled Facilities Grant information. The checklist also prompts them to discuss landlord permission and approval before starting work. It gives no award estimate.

Ask the relevant service to confirm approval before work begins. Starting early can affect funding. You can also ask Citizens Advice or Age UK for help understanding the process.
