THE CEDARSTEP GUIDE

Grab rails: what to ask before fitting one

Discuss the task, rail position and fixing with an occupational therapist and competent fitter.

A rail needs to suit the task, the person and the place it will be fitted. Copying the position of a rail in someone else's bathroom is not a useful assessment.

Describe where support is needed

Tell the OT whether the difficulty is entering the shower, standing at the sink, using the toilet or negotiating a step. Ask them to explain the proposed position and rail type.

NHS inform's home safety guidance highlights properly positioned, securely attached bathroom handrails.

Questions for the fitter

  • Is the rail designed for the intended use?
  • Is the surface suitable for its fixing system?
  • What checks and maintenance does the manufacturer require?
  • Who should you contact if it moves or becomes damaged?

Use a competent fitter or ask about the council's handyperson service. This guide does not give drilling, fixing or positioning instructions. A towel rail is not a substitute for equipment designed and fitted for support.

Check support before paying

Ask the local assessment service about provision before ordering. Start with the council assessment route; services and funding differ across the UK.
