Shower stool or shower chair: questions to ask

How to discuss shower seating, available space and equipment fit before buying.

Choose shower seating with an assessor, rather than deciding from the product name. Ask what support you need while washing and while getting into and out of the shower.

Check the whole routine

Describe the shower entrance, available floor space, controls and where another person stands if they assist you. Ask whether you can try the proposed seating in the setting where you will use it.

NHS inform describes shower seats as one possible occupational therapy adaptation. It does not mean every shower seat will fit every shower or suit every person.

Questions about a specific model

  • What are its overall dimensions and stated user weight limit?
  • Is it designed for your shower floor and intended use?
  • Are the height, arms and back support appropriate for you?
  • How is it cleaned, checked and maintained?
  • Who will explain how to use it?

Follow the exact manufacturer's instructions. Equipment described as a stool, chair or perch may have different intended uses; ask the supplier to explain them.

When the shower itself needs changing

If access is the main problem, discuss the room as a whole. A level-access shower or wet room needs professional assessment, design and installation. Check the funding route before commissioning work. Local assessment and provision differ across the UK.
