Describe the whole journey through your home, including the front step, doorways and the route to the toilet. A difficulty on the stairs may be only one part of the picture.
Bring these questions to an assessment
- Where do you pause or need someone else's help?
- Can you reach the rooms you use each day?
- Does your walking aid fit through the spaces you need?
- What changes would you be comfortable making to your home?
The NHS home adaptations guide includes stairlifts, rails and access changes among possible adaptations. Ask an OT which options are appropriate before seeking quotes.
Larger work needs a plan
Stairlifts, through-floor lifts and structural changes are installer jobs. Ask who surveys the property, what permissions are needed, who maintains the equipment and what happens if it stops working. Get these answers in writing.
Check the route to grants and council help before committing to work. The schemes and application process vary across the UK.
