Walk through the daily routine in your mind: getting out of bed, reaching the bathroom, making a drink and answering the door. Note where you feel uncertain or need help.
Start with the home around you
The NHS falls guidance discusses household trip hazards, suitable equipment and asking for an assessment. A checklist can help you prepare for that conversation; it cannot assess someone's health or balance.
Use our home safety discussion checklist.
Plan how to get help
If you are considering an alarm or key safe, ask who responds, how they gain entry, what coverage is required and what happens during a power or network outage. Read the supplier's current service terms rather than relying on a feature name.
If someone has fallen or feels unwell, seek healthcare advice. Don't put off asking for help while you research equipment.
Prepare a wider home adaptation plan. Local health and social care routes differ across the UK.
